Impairment and Safety
Medical cannabis treatment plans work to fit within each patient’s work and lifestyle needs. It is important for patients to know that Cannabis may have side-effects that can impair their judgement and affect their ability to react in life threatening situations. It is therefore advisable for patients who experience severe impairment on cannabis therapy to refrain from heavy lifting, operating machinery and driving.
It is important for patients to know that public impairment due to medical cannabis is not an offence and that they are strongly encouraged to take public transit, taxis, approach medical practitioners or even law enforcement and call 9-1-1 if they feel severely impaired or have an adverse reaction. Impairment can depend on how the individual reacts to cannabis medicine, what kind of cannabis was consumed, how much cannabis was consumed or whether it was inhaled or ingested. Cannabis medicine may cause side-effects for as long as 24 hours after ingestion.
